On a very grey and windy Sunday afternoon, we braved the winds to attend the Piazza Art Market at the Metropolitan Cathedral in Liverpool. Above is a picture of our stall.
What started out to be around 30 stalls, soon began to decrease, because of the bad winds, we fast became one of just a few stall holders who felt they could stay. I was very glad we had brought framed work, which was too heavy to blow away easily. In fact by 1pm there were only around 9 stalls left. And by around 2pm (with a whole 2 hours of the market to go) there were just 4 stalls. (They have no staying power some of these young artists, do they?)
But this did give us chance to spread out a bit, and we had a long line of works for sale along the floor.
At 3pm and for the last hour of the Market there was only our stall and one other, but still the people kept visiting, so we stayed. And all in all, it was worth it, we made some new contacts, and perhaps most importantly we enjoyed ourselves.

LIKE Joan Miro? Love cool, crisp, abstract art? Then you will probably love the father and son exhibition on at Portico Library and Gallery - Small Things.
Anthony and Nathan Pendlebury, who go under the name Erpen a tribute to Anthony's father Eric (who always signed his name ‘Erpen'), have put together a stunning exhibition of smaller works.
Both artists grew up in the north west but while father Anthony has semi-retired in The Lake District, Nathan is on the cusp of an exciting career, having just gained a successful place in the ‘2007 Chelsea International Fine Art Competition' in New York.
I caught up with him... |
Who: Nathan Pendlebury, 34, grew up in Salford, Warrington, and Liverpool
What: Abstract artist who creates both painting and photography, currently exhibiting at Portico.
What's it all about: I paint and photograph what is around me. I live in a city and produce worked based around an urban theme, looking at man's presence within an urban environment. This is in contrast to my Dad's painting which has a more landscape influence as he lives in Cumbria, but when displayed together I feel they fit well, and we often influence each other.
What's next: Well quite a lot really, we are trying our best to apply and do as much as we can. I have recently finished a group exhibition in New York, and a major commission for John Lewis Liverpool Espresso Bar.
We will be taking part in the Piazza Art market at the Liverpool Catholic Cathedral in June to organise a small art market in Bootle, just outside Liverpool, in July.
We also have an exhibition set for July and August called 'Alone Together' at the Harris Museum & Art Gallery. We will each have work on separate staircases at the venue (hence the name).
We will be taking part in the 'Buy Art Fair' at Urbis in Manchester, and the 'Manchester Art Fair' at Manchester Central (formerly G-Mex) in October.
We have have applied to a number of open exhibitions namely the Sefton Open at the Atkinson gallery in Southport, and the 4th Wirral Open at the Williamson Gallery.
In November and December we are hoping to have group exhibitions in a number of venues in Cumbria. In February next year I have a solo show at the Egg cafe in Liverpool.
In 2009 we hope to show in Manchester and London.
We are having September 2008 off [Do you really think time off is necessary? Haha – Vic] as I am getting married.
Favourite artist: Robert Rauschenberg, Franz Kline, David Hockney, Tapies, Shawn McNulty to name only a few.
Favourite Manchester art exhibition (not your own)?: Well I haven't seen it yet but I hope to see Being Here: Photography by Eight Groups in Manchester Saturday 14 April 2007 - Sunday 8 July 2007 at the Manchester Art Gallery
Which city has more to offer Liverpool or Manchester?: Both I think, Liverpool is like a blank canvas at the moment and recent developments have created quite a buzz in the city at the moment which is great to be part of. However part of my heart has always been with Manchester as I have grown up visiting. The Manchester art scene is also something I have not had much part in yet, but certainly hope to in the future.

Nathan & Anthony Pendlebury and their two-man Exhibition called 'Small Things' at the Portico Gallery in June 2008 (in Manchester) is recognised and features in the UK National Newspaper ‘The Independent ’ and its essential guide to going out and staying in (namely "The Information").
Nathan said, “It was a great surprise to see this, we always try to promote our shows and hopefully this will help more new people see our art?”
